Knitted Bracelet Showcase!

Today KL is back with a really pretty Bracelet she made all by herself!!! I think that she did an amazing job and I know you will too! Let us know what you think of it by leaving a comment below! So without further ado, here is KL!

My Knitted Bracelet

Just for fun I knitted a bracelet. I wanted to make one ever since I saw them in a knitting book we got out from the library. My mom helped me to figure out how to knit it. Here is how I made it.

I used size three double pointed knitting needles, some striped sock yarn, six small orange beads and a big crystal bead. We cast on five stitches. I knitted six rows and then I put a small orange bead on. I did this by knitting two stitches and taking the third stitch off with small crochet hook that had a small orange bead on it. Then I slipped the bead onto the third stitch. This is harder than it sounds. I did this about six times until it fit around my wrist. My mom tied it off and put the big crystal bead on for me, so I can button or unbutton it. This bracelet is very pretty, but if you get it wet, it will stretch out and smell like wet dog!

DIY Science Expirment~ by JL age 15

I am so excited to post a great science experiment done by JL! He has written it up with pictures so that you can try it too!!!!!

Experiment 3.1~ How a Barometer works


Supplies :
Large Mason Jar
Tea light candle
Candle holder
Matches
Clear flat bowl
Water
Food coloring


I first took the clear flat bowl and filled it with a very little water so it was about a quarter of a inch full.
then I put the mason jar in the bowl to double check if there was enough water. After that I put food coloring in the bowl dyeing it red. Next I put the candle in its holder and placed it in the water, I lit the candle with the match and covered it with the Mason jar.



When I covered the candle with the Mason jar the flame started to slowly dim until it finally went out.

While the flame burned up the oxygen in side the jar the water had to seep into the jar to even out the air pressure, so that there was a even pressure inside the jar and outside it.



The first time I performed the experiment I did not have enough water to even out the pressure, so I had to put more water in to the bowl so it worked. This experiment shows how a barometer works. After I observed what happen I cleaned everything up and put it away.

Science Post by KL (age 12) ~ Bats

Today KL is back with a report she wrote on her latest science study on Bats!!!!

BATS

Bats are nocturnal. This means that bats sleep during the day and are awake during the night. Bats range in size and color. They can be: black, white, red, brown, or gray. Bats can be different sizes. The biggest bat is the Giant Flying Fox; his wingspan is about five feet! He weighs about two pounds! The smallest bat is the Kitti’s Hog-Nosed Bat; his wingspan is only five inches! He weighs only one- fourteenth of an ounce!

When bats go hunting they send out high-pitched beeping sound, that humans can’t hear. When the beeping noise reaches an insect, it echoes back telling the bat the size and shape of the insect. Then the bat dives and catches the insect. This is called echolocation.

Advanced Art Class~ Week 3~ by JL age 15

I also have the pleasure today of welcoming JL! He is here to share his work this week in the advanced art class!

In this week’s art lesson I learned how to sketch. I started by sketching straight horizontal and vertical lines, which took me a little to get used to. I then sketched circles and ellipses or ovals. I found the circles to be very difficult. After I learned some of the sketch lines, I learned to combine them and make some shapes. I combined the oval and the strait lines to make a cylinder. Next I took the oval, sketched a curve line under it to make a bowl. Then I took the things that I learned and used them to make a bottle. Before, I didn’t really know how to sketch properly, now I really appreciate it.

Art Class ~ Week 3~ By: KL (age 12)

Hi everyone, I want to once again welcome KL who is here to share with us her thoughts on our color class last week!

For this week’s art lesson we talked more about the color wheel. The color wheel can have many colors in it. But there are six main colors that it will always have, those colors are red, blue, and yellow, (The primary colors) and green, purple, and orange (The secondary colors). It may have colors in between, but it will always have the primary and secondary colors. For our lesson this week we used the color wheel with six colors, the primary and secondary colors.

First everyone got a paper with a plain color wheel with six parts; each was at a different spot on the paper. Then we each painted in the primary colors in a triangle; leaving one triangle in between each spot. In the empty spots we painted the secondary colors in between the spots that they go in. For an example we painted purple in between the red and the blue. The older ones (Me, JS, and VL) mixed the primary colors to get the secondary color, but for the littler ones (NL, CS, ML, etc.) the colors were already mixed. After we painted the color wheel we painted a picture using the color wheel as a part of the picture. Even though we each had a color wheel on our paper and we each used the same colors it was all different because we each had a different picture.

Advanced Art Class~ Week 2~ by: JL (age 15)

I am so very happy to have JL back today to share more of the art that he has done in the advance art class this week! Take a look and let us know what you think! I think he is doing a great job! :)

In this week’s art lesson, I again used contour drawing, but this time I drew three-D objects. So I went around the house and found: a clay frog, a pawn, a pair of scissors, a pocket knife, and a stapler. I was trying to look at the objects as lines instead of shapes. It was kind of tricky to get the hang of it, as you can see by the first one I drew (the clay frog). I didn’t look at it as lines, I kept thinking of it as a frog, so it didn’t turn out as well. I was really proud of the knife and the stapler. I think they turned out well. This way of drawing, has made things that are difficult to draw, a lot easier to do.

Advanced Art Class~ Week 1~ By JL (age 15)

Well everyone, I have another student blogger today! He is one of the students in the advanced art class an they are working on drawing. So welcome JL!

In this week’s art lesson I learned contour drawing, which is where you try to drawing the exact same shape and bends of wire that you have twisted. The purpose of this is for you to learn to look at shapes as just lines instead of what they really are. So when I did my drawling exercise which was to draw a bird, a chief, and an owl I drew them upside down. I also learned to look critically at my art which is when you step back and look were you could do better, this way you can learn from your mistakes. It was a lot of fun to learn and to do and I can’t wait to learn what’s next.

Art Class Week 1~ By KL (age 12)

Well I am honored to introduce to you today one of the students from our art classes. She has asked to write a post about our first class and what she learned!!!! So without further ado, here is KL, our Student Blogger today:

For our first art class we learned about primary colors. Primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. You cannot mix any other colors to make these colors; they make all the other colors. For an example, red and blue make purple, blue and yellow make green, and red and yellow make orange. But if you mix a little more red than yellow, you will get red orange, or if you mix a little more yellow than red, you will get yellow orange, etc.

For our project we did a pattern. First, we folded a piece of paper into eight squares, and then we drew what we were going to paint in one square. Next, we all started to paint. We were only allowed to use the primary colors. It took longer if you had a complicated pattern. They were all really cool patterns and each one was different. There was no pattern that was the same. It was really fun and I can’t wait for the next art project.
